What is Enlightenment?

Wednesday, January 11, 2012
I've been asked what does the word enlightenment mean to me? And since that subject is crucial in this blog, I feel that's worth elaborating on. Enlightenment can be defined many different ways and the the definition can be one that illustrates the uniqueness of the seeker. The dictionary defines enlightenment as this:

en·light·en·ment/enˈlītnmənt/

Noun:
  1. The action of enlightening or the state of being enlightened.
  2. The attainment of spiritual knowledge or insight, esp. (in Buddhism) that which frees a person from the cycle of rebirth.

I think that frequently people who have not put much thought into the meaning attribute 'enlightenment' with Buddhism, meditation and Nirvana. Although there are many beautiful lessons taught in Buddhism, especially ones that involve true compassion for humanity and all living things, you do not need to practice any religion to benefit from exploring your being and folowing your own path to a deeper understanding and higher consciousness.

In the secular sense, 'enlightenment' basically means "full comprehension of a situation".  Since I am more of a spiritual being, I have decided to define it as this:

A spiritual revelation or deep insight into the meaning and purpose of all things. The path to understanding yourself in entirety; your mind, your heart and your soul which leads to fundamentally changing your own consciousness.

What does enlightenment mean to you? Are you seeking the answers to the universe and your existence?
